Electrical, Plumbing, and HVAC manager: ENJOY!
Are you as busy as I am? AND, I don’t even have kids yet, wow what’s my excuse! Let’s be honest, I wear heels every day and have done so since I was 12. Now that I’m much older than 12, my feet hurt, swell up and often scream for flats. But alas, my strong will says, “NO you do not get to wear flats!” Because now I’m not trying to look sexier but instead I’m trying to fight my vertical challenge and appear taller because I keep gaining weight! Oh the ever constant battle. Gain more weight, buy taller shoes! Which wouldn’t be a big deal if we were all trophy wives headed to the spa. But instead, if you’re like me, you’re working in a fast paced ever changing environment.
Heck, you may even be in a SHOP! An actual shop with cement floors and contracting equipment all around you. Perhaps even an assembly line or two behind your desk…now try to run quickly to the copier for your upcoming meeting notes and dodge a forklift in your 4” heels, are we being ridiculous? No, we are being awesome. But efficiency doesn’t come from running back and forth in uncomfortable shoes. Efficiency comes from delegation. How do you delegate and then walk away – the peace of knowing someone else is responsible.

Can we ever really be a “hands-off” Service or HVAC manager?
Don’t be all things to all people. Enable your team and don’t be disillusioned by the process. Growth takes time. Bring new ideas and processes to the table, get “buy-in” then include members on your team to do their part. Hold them accountable with reminders. And, ready for a secret, here’s my greatest new delegation tip for 2014 that has ACTUALLY been working:
- Send your key employees a quick email each morning, with the subject line: Today
o Body of the email, example: Tonya, what are you going to accomplish today? With this email or “text” for techs, they immediately accept responsibility, quickly rethink the recent responsibilities you’ve given them, and send you a list back of their goals for the day. When written down, goals are much more likely to be accomplished and efficiencies…well, they go up! -Danielle Putnam
