What would it be like if we had a missionary zeal for changing the standards in our industry?

I wrote that first line, and then I paused – thinking about what I had written, I questioned whether or not to write more. What more could I say beyond that question without ruining the power it asks?

Then it hit me – you do have missionary zeal for changing the standards in our industry, in your home service business, and that’s why you’re doing what you’re doing.

So, I’ll rephrase the question – what would it be like if TOGETHER we had a missionary zeal for changing the standards in OUR industry?

What if we took extreme ownership of the way home service providers were perceived and extreme ownership of the experience of the customer’s journey with our industry?

The Chicken Soup for the Soul Author, Jack Canfield, also wrote another book long ago called The Success Principles – How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be. This book has collected dust on my shelf for many years, but today, I dusted it off and turned the page to a sticky note I’d left as a placeholder over a decade ago – the sticky note landed on a simple formula: E+R=O

Event + Response = Outcome

Artificial Intelligence is coming. Big business is coming. The big boys of the world are buying up all the medium boys, and they’re trying to squash us small boys. On top of it all, “I’ve heard there’s going to be a recession; I’ve decided not to participate.” ~ I love it when people say that.

There once was a man who owned a Lexus dealership in Southern California. When the Gulf War broke out, people stopped coming in to buy Lexuses. They knew they would slowly go out of business if they kept responding (R) to the event (E) of nobody coming into the showroom. Their typical response (R) would have been to continue placing ads in the newspaper and on the radio, then wait for people to enter the dealership. But that wasn’t working. The outcome (O) they were getting was a steady decrease in sales.

So, they tried several new things. The one that worked was driving a fleet of new cars out to where the rich people were – the country clubs, marinas, polo grounds, parties in Beverly Hills and Westlake Village – and then inviting them to take a spin in a new Lexus.

After test-driving the new car, many people bought or leased a new Lexus.

The dealership had changed their response (R) to an unexpected event (E) – the war – until they got the outcome (O) they wanted increased sales.

They ended up selling more cars per week than before the war broke out. They took extreme ownership, changed their response to an event, and received the outcome they sought.

And that’s what it takes for us to change the standards in our businesses and industry:

Extreme ownership by changing our response to events or ‘circumstances.’

You know, a few months ago at one of our annual mastermind events, a fellow contractor, Daniel Squires, was speaking with my mother – as they talked, he shared with her about a book that had made a difference in his life and highly recommended the book. A few weeks later, she asked me, “Would you mind messaging Dan to ask what the name of that book was?”

After a quick email exchange, Dan sent me the Amazon link to a book called “Insanity of God.” Hmmm, I thought to myself, if he’s so strongly recommending this book, I wonder what it’s about – and I ordered both my mother and I a copy.

As I began to read page after page, I couldn’t help but feel thankfulness towards Dan for recommending this book – this was the mindset shift I needed for my family and my children to remind us of a worldwide perspective again. I can’t even begin to dive into the details of this book here and now, but I can talk about the importance of community and getting together as a whole – someone has a life-changing story for you – someone has that missing puzzle piece you’ve been searching for. Someone knows something that will ignite an area of your life that has been stagnant.

This next opportunity for us all to get together is closer than you think:
